Kamado Joe Classic vs Big Joe Comparison

If you are buying your first kamado, one of the biggest questions is simple: should you go for the Kamado Joe Classic or step up to the Big Joe?

Both are excellent ceramic cookers with the same core strengths. They hold heat well, run steadily once dialled in, and give you the flexibility to smoke low and slow, grill over charcoal, and even cook pizza with the right setup. The real difference is size, and that matters more than many first-time buyers expect.

Here is the simple version: if you mostly cook for 2 to 4 people, the Classic will suit a lot of households. If you regularly entertain, cook larger cuts, or just want more breathing room on the grill, the Big Joe is often the better long-term buy.

What Makes Kamado Joe Cookers So Good?

Kamado-style BBQs have built a strong following for good reason. Their ceramic construction gives them excellent thermal mass, which helps them hold a steady temperature once they are up and running.

Compared with lighter steel cookers, that usually means less fiddling with the vents during a long cook. Once you get the airflow set, a kamado can stay remarkably stable for hours.

They are also genuinely versatile. You can:

• smoke low and slow
• grill directly over charcoal
• roast
• cook hot and fast
• set them up for pizza cooking with the right accessories

That versatility is a big reason first-time buyers are drawn to them. You are not just buying a smoker or just buying a grill. You are getting a cooker that can handle a wide range of outdoor cooking styles very well.

The main difference: 46 cm vs 61 cm

The Kamado Joe Classic sits at around 46 cm in diameter, while the Big Joe comes in at around 61 cm.

On paper, 15 cm might not sound massive. In real cooking terms, it is a very noticeable jump.

That extra grill space gives you more room to:

• cook for more people in one go
• fit larger cuts more comfortably
• set up different cooking zones
• avoid overcrowding the grill
• make entertaining less stressful

This is the real decision point. You are not choosing between good and bad. You are choosing between two high-quality kamados with different capacities.

How The Classic Feels In Real Life

For many first-time kamado buyers, the Classic is the sweet spot.

If you are usually cooking for 2 to 4 people, it is typically more than enough. It gives you the full kamado experience without taking up as much space, and the smaller cooking chamber generally takes less fuel and time to bring up to temp properly.

It can be a smart buy if you:

• mostly cook weeknight dinners
• cook for a couple or small family
• want the kamado benefits without going too large
• have limited patio or outdoor kitchen space

A lot of customers are very happy with the Classic in this role. It handles everyday cooks well and still gives you plenty of versatility.

How The Big Joe Feels In Real Life

The Big Joe gives you the same style of cooking, the same versatility, and the same ceramic stability, just with more room to work.

That extra room can make a huge difference when you are entertaining or cooking multiple items at once. Even if you are not feeding a crowd every weekend, a larger cooking surface can simply make the cook more relaxed. You have more flexibility in where food sits, more space for larger cuts, and less risk of the grill feeling cramped.

The Big Joe is worth a serious look if you:

• entertain regularly
• cook for larger families or groups
• like cooking multiple things at the same time
• want extra room for larger roasts or bulkier setups
• prefer having more capacity in reserve

There is a simple rule here that we often come back to: you can cook something small on a larger BBQ, but you cannot cook something big on a small BBQ. Words to live by.

Footprint & Weight Matter Too

Size is not just about cooking area. It also affects how much room the BBQ takes up in your outdoor space.

A larger kamado naturally needs a larger footprint, and ceramic cookers are not light. If your patio space is tight, or you are trying to fit the cooker into a specific outdoor kitchen layout, the Classic may be the easier option to live with.

If you have the space, though, the Big Joe can be a worthwhile step up for the added flexibility alone.

Buy the Classic if...

The Classic is probably the right choice if:

• you are mainly cooking for 2 to 4 people
• you want a more compact kamado
• you value quicker heat-up and a smaller cooking chamber
• you do not regularly cook for parties or big gatherings
• you want to get into kamado cooking without going oversized

Our view? For plenty of first-time buyers, the Classic is the smart buy. It covers a lot of everyday cooking and still gives you the versatility Kamado Joe is known for.

Buy the Big Joe if...

The Big Joe is probably the better fit if:

• you entertain often
• you cook for larger groups
• you want more space for larger cuts and easier multi-item cooks
• you would rather have extra room than wish you had upgraded later
• you have enough outdoor space to accommodate it comfortably

Our opinion here is pretty straightforward: if you know you will be hosting, cooking for crowds, or wanting extra room from day one, the Big Joe is usually worth the extra spend.

Final Verdict

The Kamado Joe Classic and Big Joe are both excellent choices. You are getting the same core strengths either way: strong heat retention, steady temperature control, and the versatility to smoke, grill, roast and cook at high heat.

The better choice comes down to how much food you want to cook and how often.

If your cooks are mostly for 2 to 4 people, the Classic should serve you well. If you entertain regularly or want more room to work with, the Big Joe is the safer long-term option.

If you are still weighing it up, watch the comparison video below and think honestly about how you cook most of the time, not just once or twice a year.
