Our Story

Bringing People Together Around Fire Since 2006

BBQ Spit Rotisseries started in 2006 with a simple belief: Food tastes better when it brings people together.

For co-founders Tony Teboneras and Rhiannon Peterson, cooking over fire was never just about the food itself. With Tony’s Greek family background, spit roasting had always been part of family life; long lunches, celebrations, stories shared around the fire, and food at the centre of meaningful connection.

But back then, quality spit roasters simply weren’t available in Australia. While living with Tony’s parents and working full-time jobs, Tony and Rhiannon imported a few pallets of spit roasters from Greece and listed them on eBay. The response was immediate. Orders started coming in from across Australia, and it quickly became clear that there were many Australians wanting to recreate these same experiences at home. What started as a side business quickly grew into something much bigger.

But from the beginning, BBQ Spit Rotisseries was never about simply selling BBQ equipment. Because the truth is:

People don’t buy a spit roaster just to cook meat.

They buy one for birthdays. Christmas lunches. Engagement parties. Family gatherings. Big celebrations and quiet weekends spent together. They buy one to create memories. And that comes with responsibility.

Too many BBQ companies simply want to sell a box and move on. We wanted to do things differently. We saw poorly designed products flooding the market. Equipment created with profit in mind before performance, reliability or cooking experience. We knew that when these products failed, it wasn’t just inconvenient. It affected moments that mattered.

Because when someone plans a special gathering and the equipment lets them down, it changes the memory of what should have been something meaningful. That never sat right with us. As passionate BBQ cooks ourselves, we design products the way we believe they should be designed; practical, reliable and built for real-world cooking. Products we’d proudly use ourselves. Because we own our manufacturing facility, we maintain control over quality and continue refining our products based on years of hands-on cooking experience and customer feedback. Over the last 20 years, building BBQ Spit Rotisseries hasn’t always been easy.

There were years of 16-hour days, seven days a week, supplier setbacks, copied product designs, online fraud, warehouse capacity issues, there always seemed to be one spot fire after another.

But we kept going because we genuinely loved what we were building and because we wanted to be the best at what we do.

Today, we’re proud to have helped hundreds of thousands of Australians cook with confidence. But what matters most to us isn’t the sale. It’s the customer who walks into our showroom knowing nothing about spit roasting and slowly becomes the person confidently cooking for family and friends. It’s the photos customers send us after a successful cook. The stories. The celebrations. The messages thanking us for helping make an important occasion special. Because cooking with fire does something different. It slows people down. It draws people in. People step away from their phones. Kids get involved. Families gather around the fire. Stories get shared and people continue to talk about the great time they had months afterwards In a world that feels increasingly disconnected, we believe cooking over fire reconnects us.

And when you buy from BBQ Spit Rotisseries, you’re not just buying a product. You’re joining a community of passionate cooks who want to help you go from novice to backyard BBQ hero, with expert advice, trusted equipment and support every step of the way. Because we don’t just sell BBQs.

We help people create magical memories around cooking with fire
