Atomic Chicken Southern Fried Hot 'N Spicy chicken coating in a 500g resealable pouch

 Suitable for:

  • Southern fried chicken pieces, cooked in batches in a fryer or pan
  • Fried chicken burgers made with whole thigh fillets or halved breast fillets
  • Tenderloin chicken strips
  • Home cooks who want the seasoning and the flour in one pouch

Why fried chicken fans choose this coating

  • Flour, spices and seasoning are already blended, so there is nothing to measure or mix
  • Half a pouch (250 g) coats 6–7 chicken pieces
  • Resealable pouch keeps the rest fresh for the next batch
  • Works on thigh fillets, breast fillets and tenderloins
  • Step-by-step buttermilk fried chicken recipe printed on the back of the pack
  • Australian owned and made

It suits anyone who wants spicy southern fried chicken at home without building a seasoned flour from scratch.

Crunch and spice in one pouch

Good fried chicken comes down to the coating. This one blends plain flour and corn flour with spices, chicken salt and rice cereal, so the seasoning goes on with the flour in a single step.

  • Ready-seasoned blend: the spices and salt are already in the flour, so every piece is seasoned the same way.
  • Rice cereal and corn flour: both are part of the blend alongside the plain flour.
  • 500 g resealable pouch: use half for one batch and seal the rest for later.
  • Two batches per pouch: the pack recipe uses 250 g of coating for 6–7 chicken pieces.

How to cook with Hot 'N Spicy chicken coating

The recipe on the back of the pack is a classic buttermilk southern fried chicken. Using this Hot 'N Spicy chicken coating takes a little planning, because the chicken marinates in buttermilk for at least two hours before it is coated and fried.

  1. Gather 6–7 chicken pieces (skinless preferred), half a pouch (250 g) of coating, 600 ml of buttermilk, 2 tablespoons of salt, and sunflower, canola or peanut oil for frying.
  2. Trim any unwanted skin or fat. For even cooking, place thighs or breasts between plastic wrap and gently pound them to a uniform thickness.
  3. Whisk the salt into the buttermilk in a large bowl, add the chicken and mix until well coated.
  4. Transfer to an airtight container or zip lock bag and marinate in the fridge for at least 2 hours. Overnight is better.
  5. While the oil heats, pour the coating into a medium bowl and cover each piece well, pressing it in with your hands for a nice thick layer. A thick coat of buttermilk helps create the crunchy bits.
  6. Fry in batches of 2 to 3 pieces until golden brown and cooked through. Do not overcrowd the fryer or pan.
  7. Rest the chicken on a wire rack to drain off excess oil, then serve.
